Writing Camps

Every year, Austin Bat Cave puts together free summer writing workshops. These camps are open registration for students in Austin and surrounding cities.

Creative Writing Workshops

All of our in-school and after-school workshops for children ages 6-18 are FREE for participants. We partner with Title 1 schools and nonprofits to match students with volunteers.

Publishing

Every year, we publish an anthology of student writing. We believe that when students see their work in print, they take pride in having become published authors, and they have concrete evidence of their accomplishments.

Tutoring

Our tutors provide one-on-one instruction to students and guide them through the full brainstorming, drafting, editing, and rewriting narrative writing process.

Adult Classes

We are excited to offer adult writing programs for writers of all skill levels. The fees from our adult writing classes are used to both subsidize our programs for children and to pay your workshop instructors.

ARIDELSY CASTAÑEDA

Leaving my mom was the hardest thing I’ve faced in my life. I was crying the whole way to the border. When I got to the U.S., I gave my dad the biggest hug ever. Although I was happy to see my dad, I still missed my mom a ton. A few months went by and I told my dad to make my mom come with us and he agreed. I still remember to this day how my mom came,

When I was on the border of Mexico and U.S.A, a feeling of nervousness hit me because of all the news of people getting arrested by the police and getting deported, but my mom just held my hand and told me “everything is going to be ok, just relax.” When it was our turn, my grandfather told the police we were going on a vacation and the officer looked at me with

I remember I began to whisper to my dad, “I don’t want to go in there.” I saw all the 8th graders with all their friends talking, hugging and catching up while I felt so small inside. I felt so terrified and nervous. I then realized that my eyes began to get teary and I had tears come down off my cheek. My dad wiped my tears away and told me it’s alright, mamma. He hugged me and in that very mome
